An Ascension Materials Guide for Honkai: Star Rail 4.0, Phase One

All characters in Honkai: Star Rail need materials to level up and ascend their abilities, especially for the newest Elation units in the 4.0 update. Yao Guang is the first Elation unit to make their debut which has already reshaped the gameplay meta in various ways. But after you consider the new builds, kits, and team comp formations and line-ups, you gotta inevitably collect and use the Ascension materials to keep their powers updated against the stronger enemies. Here’s an in-depth list and guide to all the first phase’s materials needed to level up.

How Does Ascension Work?

Ascension is the main level up system in Honkai: Star Rail. Without Ascending your units, their kits and basic abilities will start to fall behind when it comes to damage or even healing outputs. You can have the best build combos possible, but they’ll inevitably fall short if you forget to Ascend at a certain point. Doing so requires a set number of specific materials that usually align with the character’s respective region. In this case for units like Yao Guang, this would be materials only found from enemies and chests in Planetarcadia. To have an easier time at collecting rare materials and pulling 5-star units, try using a Honkai star rail top up from us now!

There’s also the Trace Nodes and materials that are often confused with Ascension. Trace delves deeper into the individual abilities of each unit. However, Ascension improves mainly the stats of a character’s kit. Trace meanwhile actually adds new parts of an ability entirely that adds to the unit’s overall kit. These can get more complicated though, so we’ll be focusing on basic Ascension and stat level ups for now. Trace Nodes are definitely still critical for maximizing a unit’s kits, but will require more budgeting of your materials, credits, and order of upgrading.

Yao Guang’s Ascension Materials

As the introductory Elation character from Planetarcadia, Yao Guang is an essential unit to build and Ascend right when you pull her. She’s considered a Support unit thanks to the plethora of supportive buffs in her kit, so she has a good mix of damage dealing with follow-up attacks and buffing overall. However, to make her buffs have more of an impact later down the line, Ascending her kit is important to help her also match the rest of the team. Due to a lack of available Elation characters for right now, she has a lot of catching up to do when first pulled.

Evernight’s Ascension Materials

Evernight is a Remembrance and Main DPS unit while still having a few supportive buffs in her kit. While having lots of abilities that deal AOE damage to all enemies in combat, including a very high Critical Hit and Rate chance and damage, she can also buff all memosprites in the team. If you use a lot of memosprites, Evernight will boost their damage or even healing abilities that can pair well with plenty of Remembrance units. This makes ascending Evernight and her respective buffs a worthy investment in the long run.

Hysilens’ Ascension Materials

Hysilens is often considered one of the best units in the game for teams that specialize in dealing damage over periods of time. This means that her abilities continue to deal damage throughout multiple turns even when being dealt by her allies. However, she’s usually paired with units like Kafka to truly shine, otherwise you’ll need to play into other strategies. Ascending her will help increase the number of damage she does per turn.

Black Swan’s Ascension Materials

Just like Hysilens, Black Swan is another insanely powerful unit that specializes in damage over time. However, she too relies on units like Kafka on the team for maximizing her output. Units like Kafka can boost both Black Swan’s and Hysilens’ Attacks and Critical damage while still dealing damage over time. All three add up to make one of the most powerful and practically perfect teams with a healer to boot. Ascending Black Swan will always help boost her overall damage output combined with team buffs for a deadly combo.
